Theme & Color Scheme
We love a good theme!! And truthfully, we haven’t thrown too many parties without a solid theme. Having a theme that excites us helps get our creative juices flowing and makes the celebration far more fun to plan. Often with our kid parties, their interests for that stage of their lives make the selection clear.
Despite our efforts to avoid them, Scout was quickly drawn to the Disney princesses in her preschool years and loved all the movies, toys and dress up. We threw a Mermaid Party, a Brave Adventure Party, and a Frozen Party over three consecutive years. With each princess party, there is a display of theme decor at the party store to purchase, but often that isn’t quite the look we are going for.
Instead, we aimed to create those same themes, but with our own look. In some case, we have taken some of those party store pieces and combined them with Etsy printables or clip art and homemade crafts in order to piece together something that fits our style. When we are short on time, we tend to purchase more, while other events we aim to make everything. Those are personal choices for what works best for your lifestyle, but we’d love to help you find your inspiration.
There have been times where our kids have selected themes where not much was available, such as Davis wanting a Napoleon Dynamite party to celebrate his 9th birthday. Tackling this requires a lot of creativity, but also can be SO much fun, especially if party guests share in the love of the theme.
Focusing on a color scheme can help to make a party feel cohesive and aid in making sure all of the party elements go together. Sometimes a party theme has an obvious color palette, like the Classic Minnie Mouse Party where red, black and white (with maybe a pop of yellow) were fairly obvious. Other occasions, like a 40th Birthday party, may be harder to nail down. If you struggle, look for inspiration in party elements you plan to use, like invitations centerpieces, and then run with the colors in those.
Etsy has to be one of our favorite places to find inspiration for party themes! We also love that there are a great range of DIY party pieces like printables, invitations, and banners. A few of my favorites are Lauren Haddox Design, Owlie Powlie, and Tania’s Design Studio. If you are looking for theme inspiration for an event, they will be something that sparks excitement.
We also LOVE Pinterest! It really is a must when planning an event and sparking our imaginations and creativity. We love Pinterest so much that Davis & Scout has now created our own Pinterest page where we will share ideas from our parties as well as things that inspire us! Please follow us!
Most of my parties start with white or black linens, with color accents brought out though fabric table runners and bright colored napkins. Some table runners like this adorable and versatile buffalo check runner can be found on Amazon. Target has a great selection of patterns, colors, and even great textures like sequin or faux fur, that are on trend for the season, like this floral pattern runner. The easiest way to get the exact color or look is to use fabric. JoAnn Crafts, Hobby Lobby, Fabric.com, or Amazon have good fabric selections that are often very reasonable. If you like to sew you can finish them yourself, but I typically just cut the fabric into the desired size. Then I fold and press the unfinished edges with an iron. You could also use pinking shears to finish edges. I use the same fabrics over and over for different events and purposes. Like the red polka dot fabric that was purchased for a Minnie Mouse party, was reused for Valentine’s decor plus the Woodland Fairy party and Vintage Airplane parties.
Adding banners, printable elements and crafted items, sometimes balloons also allow opportunity to repeat the color scheme or add an accent color. Check out our posts for ideas on those party design elements.
